We're offering something new this summer at the Centre for Open Learning. Our Festival of Creative Learning 2017 presents a wide range of Short Courses, in an array of inspiring subject areas.
Try something new with our Teatime Tasters
During July and August you can dip your toe in with our Teatime Tasters, our evening events from 5.30pm - 7.00pm, which offer you the chance to try something new. Take a seat and enjoy 'COL in Performance: Jazz' presented by professional musician and COL tutor Dick Lee and friends or indulge in Lucinda Byatt's exploration into the 'History of Food:16th Century Rome'. If you're interested in art and printmaking, 'The Proof is in the Printing' is a series of bite-size introductions to the five key elements of printing practice, offering the chance to get some hands on experience. We hope our Teatime Tasters will inspire you to join us in the new academic year.
Get Creative this Summer in Edinburgh
If you'd prefer something a little more intensive then we have some fantastic Short Courses to recommend. In July you can spend two days with art tutor Deidre Macleod as she takes you through 'Explorations in Watercolour, Gouache and Ink' as expressive and descriptive media. Or perhaps technology is your thing - if so, you can learn how to make your own films with Niall Webb's course 'Smart Phone Short Films' in just 3 days. Need help with the script? Screenwriter Douglas Dougan gives you all the guidance you'll need in his course 'Write a Short Film Script' during the first week in August. For those interested in the collaboration of art and writing, our August Short Course 'Developing Children's Picture Books', led by Scottish author Janis Mackay and illustrator Kasia Matyjaszek, offers the chance to create and explore collage, drawing, storytelling and creative writing, to make your very own Children's picture book.
Language courses for Beginners and Improvers
Language learning is also a big part of our summer Festival of Open Learning. We have a variety of 4 week courses starting in July and August. Whether you're a beginner or looking improve your fluency, we're sure there will be a language course this summer to inspire you to learn a new language or to keep practising those language skills you have already learned.
