Chinese for Travellers

An introductory course for learners who have no prior knowledge of the Chinese language. It is designed for those who are planning to visit China for tourism purposes.

Running for 12.5 hours over 5 weeks, this course takes learners through basic expressions needed in typical conversational situations for travellers. Pronunciation and conversations will be the focus of this course. Chinese characters will be presented in teaching materials together with pinyin ( romanisation of Chinese pronunciation) but not taught. After taking this course, learners will be equipped with basic vocabulary and expressions to deal with some typical situations when travelling in China, and will have become more familiar with cultural features in these situations.

By the end of the course students

* will have learned to pronounce Chinese names
* have started to tune in to the sounds of Chinese language and the tones
*  have learned some basic phrases used in for social interaction
*  gained an understanding of some cultural aspects of independent travelling in China

The course is tutorial-based with a combination of joint class activities and group work. Supplementary material is prepared by the teacher.

Students will be taught in a group with the emphasis on speaking and listening.

No advance reading is required.  Students will benefit from practice outwith the class and should aim to spend 1-2 hours per week reviewing materials.
